First of the Summer Wine...

16 Jul 2015

... And indeed wine for every season!  But Summer is here right now (and how!) and we have some fresh delights for you with a new wine from our own winery in the Minervois, our new Bag-in-Box rosé and a much anticipated shipment of Chateau de Roquefort's new rosé (post-Grêle).

We also have some new events in store: some happy occasions to allow you to get to know the wine lists a little more intimately (and get to know Trevor & Fergus, perhaps, while you are at it!)

So read on...

Bien Autre 2013

The first vintage of our new red is in!  This is the wine that we make after the varietal parcels have been put together at our winery (where, you will remember, we make thatBoulevard Napoleon). We are then left with a  selection of different wines which we can  blend into that year’s“Bien Autre”.  It is made of good things and each year will be different according to how the season went.  So even our winemaking is nose-to-tail! If you fancy a taste there will be a bottle open at Smithfield, Bread and Wine and St. JOHN Maltby. Just ask!  You can pick a bottle up on the day or if you fancy a few more than you can carry, check out our website... we deliver to your door!

St. JOHN Rosé B-i-B 2014

Just in time for your BBQ, the rosé Bag-in-Box has arrived at last! This is a crisp and refreshing wine imparted with ripe red fruit and delicate floral notes by the sunny slopes of Languedoc. Easy drinking, well made and jovial... perhaps one box is not enough! It is good for the environment, a good fit for the fridge, stays fresh for three weeks after opening, each box equates to four bottles… and at £28.50 we think that it offers good value too. Individual boxes can be picked up from all the restaurants (or please do pop in just to taste!) or there is free delivery to mainland UK addresses if you order three boxes or more (why not try the rouge and the blanc too!)

For all order enquiries contact young Max, or call him on 020 7553 9843.

Open Wine Tastings!

Our restaurant on Maltby Street is growing well into its role as point central for our wine happenings across St. John and we gladly announce that we will now be hosting informal wine tastings every second Thursday of the month, the first of which is on Thursday 9th July. The format is simple: Arrive any time between 17.00 – 20.00 and taste five fantastic wines for the cost of only £8. Young Max will be behind the table and Trevor will be on hand to tell the tales of our vignerons and demystify what's in your glass. We’ll be focusing on chilled reds for the first evening with various gems from the Loire, South West and Burgundy.

Follow us for news of this and more... See you next week!

Brave New Wine...

The much loved Grêle is all gone! A remarkable pair of wines born from a fantastic story about community, generosity and triumph over adversity - do take the time to read it here and you will see why we hope that we’ll never have reason to see these wonderful wines again. On to the good news though, Raimond de Villeneuve’s next shipment has arrived and if you enjoyed what the man could do with the grapes of others you’ll be mightily impressed by what the man can achieve with his own. The vineyards have been bio dynamic since before there was even a word for it (he is just a good winemaker, and person) and they sit high in the hills of Provence overlooking the Mediterranean sea, the altitude (up to 400m) allows Raimond to leave the grapes on the vine a little longer, gaining freshness and more complexity than is usual in this region. The Corail Rosé is elegant but with poise, the Provence sunshine pours out of the whites (Petit Sale andLes Genets) and the Gueule de Loup is an ode to the wonders of Grenache from this part of the world.

Quarterly Wine Dinners with
Trevor & Fergus

June saw the first of our Quarterly Wine Tasting Dinners at St. JOHN Maltby.  When the date was released we sold out within hours... but those who were speedy enough to grab a place at the table were greeted by Trevor proffering a range of beautiful rosésand oenological insights, and Fergus putting some very lovely things on the table. The atmosphere was one of instant, easy conviviality and we were delighted to get to know some of our keen wine buyers and drinkers!

The next, September
