Sunshine in the depth of Winter...

15 Jan 2016

Warm Wishes for 2016!

Winter has well and truly hit, with the cold snap threatening to drive away the warm memories of Christmas and New Year (what a party!!). But don't lose heart! The days are getting longer again we promise, Spring is within sight, and we've got a treat to make the wait a little shorter...

Spring comes sooner in Provence, so we turn our thoughts to those sunnier climates.  For our February feast, the first Wine Dinner of 2016, Fergus has folded the St. JOHN menu into the spirit of the South of France!  The wine stories in this region are abundant, and Trevor will be on hand to tell them. One feels a little warmer at the thought.

We have the very last few bottles of the lovely Raimond de Villeneuve's Le Grêle Rouge, that excellent one-off cuvée made with the help of thirty Provençal winemakers! Trevor says that Trevallon was the first cult vin de table wine of the South... the 2007 is now ready to drink - and drink it we will! Peter Fischer is a serious wine maker, and his Le Grand Blanc from Aix-en-Provence will make an appearance...

We'll have rosés of course along with Cassis and Bandol too, Beaumes de Venise to finish, and as any good Provençal party should, a Pastis to welcome all!

Open Bottle Wednesday

On the subject of St. JOHN Maltby... Our little place South of the river is 'St. JOHN wine central', with over 30 wines by the glass and a cozy, intimate space in which to try them all - very welcome at  this time of year! After a seasonal break we have re-started our much loved Open Bottle Wednesday for 2016.
On Wednesdays we choose a wine that we think you should try, and we give you a glass, free.  You don't even have to stay for a plate (although you'll probably want to!) It's a great way to get to know our wine list with no commitment, and a fabulous way to gain a little knowledge about wines you might not otherwise choose.

Every Wednesday, St. JOHN Maltby,
17.00 - 22.00

A New Release!

Richard Rottiers, Moulin a Vent 2014, Beaujolais

The vineyards of Moulin a Vent typically produce the most powerful and ageworthy Beaujolais wines. As such we had planned to let this wine rest happily in bottle - until today! Richard (below, having high jinks with our Trevor at last year's Vignerons' Lunch) got in touch to tell us about the wonderfully pure fruit of this vintage and implored us to drink it young, too. We tasted and swiftly agreed! Full of vitality and in a very classic style, perfect with some slow cooked lamb perhaps?  It’s available in half bottles too!

We're starting the year as we mean to go on,
full of good things!
