January should be a month of relaxation and recuperation, but we've had none of that!  We're charging full steam into February with no rest for the wicked (wicked meaning good, of course).

This month we're all about our friends.  We're playing away twice in February, collaborating on two very different dinners... then there are the happy memories from a most convivial evening at Quo Vadis where we celebrated Fergus' 1000 Cookbooks accolade (with thanks to our dear friends Jeremy Lee, Sam & Eddie Hart and Turner & George among others)... and finally we'll see you at Druid Street this weekend, buying Valentine's doughnuts for your loved ones!  Read on! 

 
 

Fergus' Nose to Tail: 
The most influential cookbook of all time!

1000 Cookbooks held a very jolly party at Quo Vadis this month to pay tribute to Fergus' seminal book.  In their poll, one hundred industry influencers were asked to choose their ten favourite cookbooks.  To our delight, Nose to Tail Eating was voted the most valued and influential cookbook ever!  1000 Cookbooks founder Matthew Cockerill said: “It’s been interesting asking people about their top 10 books. Some are popular with chefs, some with food writers, but the great thing about Nose to Tail Eating is that everyone loves it. If you care about food, about being true to your ingredients and finding the unsung hero of the dish, then that’s what it’s all about."

Presented with a Sally Arnup piglet head bronze (above!) to commemorate the occasion, Fergus added:  "I am touched to find that a book written ten years ago is still read, used and enjoyed". Read more here

 
 

A Cookbook Dinner
at The Marksman

Wednesday, Feb 23rd, 8pm

Chefs Jon Rotheram and Tom Harris, both beloved St. John alumni, are holding a new monthly series of  Cookbook Dinners at their critically acclaimed Marksman Pub. And the first will feature Fergus!  The principle is as follows: a guest chef chooses their favourite book, from which Tom, Jon and the chef will cook on the night.

Fergus' choice is Ma Gastronomie by Fernand Point. Very much a man after Fergus’ heart, M. Point reportedly shared a magnum of champagne with his barber every morning. The book is an extraordinary one compiled from the extensive annotations and ramblings from his hand written notes.  Fergus has never cooked from the recipes before; he’s taking the opportunity that Tom and Jon have presented to go way outside of his usual repertoire.  As he puts it himself,
“a flourish, a moment of way-hay” 

The menu features Oeufs à la Gelée, Crème de Volaille Truffé, Choucroute d’Ammerschwihr, Crêpes Suzette, Marjolaine… and Trevor is putting together the French wine pairings, naturally! Both Trevor and Fergus will be on hand with Jon and Tom to guide you through the evening.

£75 pp for four courses with wine.

 
 

St. JOHN at Boundary

Monday, Feb 29th, 6.30pm

A leap year special!  What better way to spend your bonus day than a jolly evening of good food, good drink and good people with Fergus and Trevor? They join their friends Peter Prescott of Prescott & Conran, and David Gleave of Liberty Wine, to celebrate our own Boulevard Napoleon wines with a St. John menu in a glamorous Boundary setting!

Peter says: “I have been a huge fan and regular guest of St. John since the first time I visited, almost 20 years ago, and I am privileged to count Trevor and Fergus as friends. So, I am looking forward to welcoming them both and their team to Boundary for what promises to be a unforgettable evening of wine, wit and winter warmers.”

And Trevor adds: “St. John plus Boundary equals conviviality squared!”

Valentine's Day is on a Sunday this year and that means one thing: your darling's going to get doughnuts from Druid Street. The Bakery Arch is open both Saturday & Sunday.  Take a romantic stroll through Maltby Street Market, pop in to St. John Maltby for a glass, then go and see our Linda at Druid Street. She's got sweets for your sweet and breads for your breakfast in bed!

Harmony! Fantasy!Symphony! Seduction!

Our vignerons make wonderful wines, as you know, but sometimes their branding is a little, um, wide of the mark for our cosmopolitan sensibilities! 

On the one hand we urge you to never judge a wine by its label... on the other hand well, it's Valentine's, what better time to enjoy the lure of a little sweet Jurque Seduction after dinner?  Or, if you fantasise about something drier, then why not go for the Jurque Fantaisie, lip-smackingly crisp!
